CLIVE
CITY OF CLIVE
Public Works Dept. • Building & Zoning Dept.
Park & Recreation Dept.
9289 Swanson Boulevard
Clive, Iowa 50325
(515) 223-6230
FAX (515) 223-6013
To: Planning andel Zoning Commission
From: Greg Michel; Development Director
Date: May 4, 1993
Re: Faith Lutheran Church Site Plan Amendment
Faith Lutheran Church located at 10395 University Avenue has
submitted a minor site plan amendment to allow construction of a
memory garden adjacent to the existing church. Located on the
southeast corner of the church, the proposed garden will be
constructed in an existing grassed area approximately 25' by 75' in
size. With the exception of three benches and a walking path, the
garden will not contain any type of new structures or require
modifications to existing structures.
The major modification to the area will involve the planting of a
number of new trees, shrubs and perennials. Crab apples are called
out on the south side of the garden to provide a buffer from
University Avenue. Ornamental trees are also shown along the
sidewalk through the garden. Additional plantings, ie. Burning
Bushes, Yews, Spirias, roses, perennials, etc. have been shown to
complete the plantings throughout the memory garden. Wood chips
will provide the ground cover for the area. An underground
irrigation system will also be installed within the memory garden.
With installation of the proposed memory garden, five existing over
story trees will be removed. The trees are approximately 4-5"
caliper trees. Members of the church have stated the trees have
scales and fungus and it is questionable whether treatment would
save the trees. At this time the church is not proposing to
relocate the trees on the site or attempt to treat the trees.
A detailed development schedule has been called out on the drawing.
The new addition does not add to or affect the overall storm water
detention on the site. The normal site plan requirements, ie.
parking, signs, building elevations, will not be impacted with this
change to the landscaping plan.
Staff recommends approval of the revised landscaping plan for Faith
Lutheran Church.
